#283 – The Bikeriders 2024 Review

The Bikeriders is a 2024 film based on a book of the same name. The book is a collection of photography and interviews from the 1960’s into the 1970’s following the rise and fall of their bike club. From humble and simple beginnings to the seedier underbelly that creeps in as the story progresses, the Bikeriders delivers !

The Bikeriders felt like Goodfellas on motorcycles.

Right off the bat I saw the trailer for this film and I was filled with optimism of a great film set in the late sixties. The music, the cast, the script, the setting and time period all of it was perfect.

Tom Hardy and Austin Butler deliver nuanced and strong performances throughout. Butler being the real rebel of the gang, the one the others try to emulate. Even Hardy’s character Johnny who sets up the club isn’t exactly what you might expect from a biker club leader and founder. Hardy and Butler have great chemistry and there’s a real true sense of kinship despite their flaws and shortcomings.

For me though the real scene stealer here is Jodie Comer. She gets much of the dialogue and is the storyteller for the film. We see the gang and the world of the Bikeriders through her eyes and she delivers in every scene. She is instantly such a loveable and relatable character who doesn’t love the Bikeriders world necessarily but she understands why the guys do.

The supporting cast featuring the likes of Boyd Holbrook, Norman Reedus and the great Michael Shannon all turn in memorable roles and really add to the realism of the film.

I found the film to be touching, gritty, unorthodox and a fascinating glimpse into the world and mind of the people at the time.

The Bikeriders felt like real cinema. Real storytelling and real character work and a breath of fresh air. Get out there and watch this on the big screen, it’s worth the trip.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 8/10
