It’s almost 4am and I’m reading Bukwoski in the sitting room
My small dog is snoring beside me
He’s Clever enough to be asleep by now
I can hear the rain outside falling down
I go outside and look up at the moon and the stars, they seem so bright and clear at this hour.
The city is asleep
There are no sirens, no people yelling, no glass bottles breaking, no cars honking at pedestrians as they try to cross the road
No traffic on the roads, no children shouting, no distractions
Just the rain gently falling down,
Falling on the leaves and onto the grass
Rain gently falling onto the bird feeder
Rain gently falling on my car
Rain gently falling on my face as I look into the night sky
Rain gently falling
Only at this hour I hear the rain falling
Only at this hour can I see the rain falling and it continues on and on as it does and always will,
Gently falling
Beautiful

Those wee hours of the morning when most are sleeping are the best…

It’s not smartness that gets us to sleep – canine or human!
It made me remember a poem I wrote about the rain 30 years ago.
