#185 – Fear and loathing in Las Vegas – Review of a GONZO book

Fear and loathing in Las Vegas comedy from the beautiful and insane mind of the one and only Dr. Hunter S Thompson. That’s a doctorate in journalism for anyone not in the know. Published in 1971 the search for the American dream began with only a typewriter, his attorney, a red convertible Chevrolet and a briefcase full of a plethora of drugs. An autobiographical masterpiece of a man so wrapped into the narrative of his work he created and defined a genre of journalism ; Gonzo journalism. Going by the name of Raoul Duke Thompson is accompanied by Dr. Gonzo his attorney. The opening lines of the book and the almost word for word film adaptation set the tone for the wild ride we set out on.

We were somewhere around Barstow on the edge of the desert when the drugs began to take hold”

The whole book feels like an acid trip that you can’t control and you have to let Dr. Gonzo take the wheel. Not to be just written off as a book about drugs there’s the failure of the 60’s counter culture movement, society, the American dream and yeah the effects of high octane drugs on the body. It’s a wild ride from start to finish, oh yeah and there there to cover the mint 400 motorcycle race. Things take twists and turns almost constantly.

Hunter S Thompson is one of those rare unique people that I’m grateful existed once upon a time on this earth. This is one of my favourite books ever written and it’s a must read.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 10/10

  1. Agree 10 out of 10! Hunter Thompson is one of my favorite authors- my personal favorite is Fear and Loathing On The Campaign Trail ’72- a book that a bring out and re-read every presidential election year. No matter how many times I have read Thompson’s works- it still brings enjoyment and laughs.

    1. That’s another great book of his too, I just got it this last Christmas and it was a brilliant read. Fear and loathing in Las Vegas is a short book but it’s brilliant and perfect.

I agree he’s so unique and hilarious too that he’s just amazing to read. I think my next book of his I’ll read is the hell angels.

      1. Hell’s Angels is another great read… the Great Shark Hunt -a collection of articles etc from the late 50’s to mid 70’s- is a great collection too.

  2. Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail ‘72 is a work of mind bending genius. Haven’t read Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, but will be giving it a go. Check out his funeral (funded by Johnny Depp) on you tube).

    1. That’s one on my next to read well that and Hells Angels too. I have seen that yeah didn’t Johnny Depp spend about $5 million of his own money to blast Hunter’s ashes out of a cannon. Such a legend
