The unbearable weight of massive talent was a hilarious film that I saw tuesday night in Omniplex and honestly I cannot wait to watch this film again. From start to finish I was hooked, laughing and along for a bromance for the ages between Nick Cage and Pedro Pascal. The story follows Nick Cage who is running low on money and he’s playing a hyper realistic version of himself. It’s more the character and public persona of Nicolas Cage we see here. He’s struggling to make a comeback “not that he’s been anywhere” of course. Nick gets offered $1 million to go to a birthday party for a millionaire who they believe to be a legitimate businessman and after some deep thought and a horror show of an improv song on the piano at his daughter’s birthday he eventually accepts and goes.
Nick arrives and meets then becomes best friends with Havi played by Pedro Pascal and their bromance is very real and so goddamn funny and entertaining. Reminiscent of Riggs and Murtaugh from lethal weapon, the nice guys, the other guys and all the great buddy movies. I haven’t seen a hilarious friendship this entertaining and charismatic on screen since once upon a time in Hollywood. Shortly after the friendship is cemented Nick is picked up by American government officials who inform Nick that Havi is a ruthless drug kingpin. Nick Cage then is in a position to help them bring him down and the comedy was non-stop.
This film is jam packed full of Nicolas Cage references and drug fueled shenanigans right from the start. There is so much humour here and so much heart on show here too. It never felt like the joke was on Nick Cage or he was the punchline or made look foolish. Obviously Nick Cage is a one of a kind legend and this film really shows it off. The character on screen of Nick Cage is something else the guys an ego maniac, attention seeker, drug taking, whiskey drinking, piano playing, party stopping, duel wielding, handgun shooting legend.
I had so much fun with this film and I can’t recommend it highly enough. It was an original and hilarious film and hey it’s not a superhero movie so that’s refreshing ! Get out if you can and see it in the cinema.
