The forgotten Icon of Comedy – Will Forte

Orville Willis Forte IV is an American actor, comedian, writer, producer and impressionist

Will Forte is hands down one of my favourite comedic actors of all time. Forte usually plays small roles in films and television as well as starring as the lead in his own television show and movies. Forte can always be counted on to be hilarious and often the best part of a good or even bad film he’s in.

Will forte began his career after he left college with a history degree from the University of California and became a financial broker until joining the groundlings comedy group in California. Will Forte shortly after became a regular cast member on Saturday Night Live and a writer and producer on that 70’s show. Forte made appearances on popular TV shows such as how I met your mother and parks and recreation. Will Forte was on SNL between 2002 until 2010 with his most well known and loved character being that of Macgruber.

MacGruber

Will Forte’s best known movie is MacGruber where he plays an ex military agent with an unbelievable record. The film is a hilarious film and perfectly parodies the 80’s unstoppable action hero who’s trained to do almost anything you can think of and an unstoppable force. Except macgruber doesn’t believe in guns oh no “guns are for the stupid” Macgruber prefers to make his own devices and means of escape. It’s very MacGyver in this way except nothing he makes is ever any use. Celery in the butt is very distracting though I must admit. Macgruber is the perfect parody based comedy that’s the best use of Forte’s comedic genius.

2010’s MacGruber

Forte was involved in the creation of Macgruber and the writing of the film. Forte and Val Kilmer’s villainous turn as Dieter Von Cunth is perfection. The pair are comedy gold in each one of their scenes and their past and entire relationship have to be seen to be believed. Forte and Macgruber go hand in hand to create one of the funniest and most laugh per minute film I’ve seen in a long time. The first week I saw Macgruber I watched it 3 times.

Last man on Earth

Forte’s last man on earth television show ran from 2015-2018 when it was abruptly cancelled. I don’t know why its a crazy show and always good for a laugh each episode but anyway we got 4 great seasons out of it and that’s going to have to be good enough for now anyway. The show follows Phil Miller through a post apocalyptic world where he believes he’s the last man on earth.

Phil (Tandy) Miller

Phil eventually encounters other survivors and the group continues to grow and grow and the show follows them as they encounter problems, move locations and fight amongst each other. From the acting, writing to the cameos from the likes of Will Ferrell, Jack Black, Jon Hamm and Kristen Wiig to name a few. The last man on earth is a hilarious take on the post apocalyptic genre. Forte shines as the annoying, stupid and painfully idiotic yet loveable and kind-hearted Phil Miller.

Will Forte has recently starred in the Irish horror comedy Extraordinary and soon to star as Shaggy in the 2020 animated film Scoob. Forte has also starred in films such as the Lego movie, that’s my boy, cloudy with a chance of meatballs and a futile and stupid gesture.

I’ve been a massive Will Forte fan for years and I can’t wait to see what other films and television shows he pops up on over the years. His distinct voice and comedic style is instantly recognisable and always makes me laugh. I can’t wait to see what he continues to do with his hilarious career in the future.
