#139 – Seinfeld 1989 – 1998

Created by: Larry David & Jerry Seinfeld

Starring: Jerry Seinfeld, Jason Alexander, Julia Louis Dreyfuss, Michael Richards, Wayne Knight, Estelle Harris & Jerry Stiller.

Seinfeld follows Jerry Seinfeld, his friends and the world around him in New York in the 90’s. Jerry lives his life and writes his material around the antics and observations he makes. Wild neighbours, chaotic and emotionally unavailable friends and a plenty of odd family members for more than a few great stand up sets.

Seinfeld holds up because of the irreverence on full display at all times. The writing was incredible on this, put Larry David and Jerry Seinfeld together and you’re bound to get some classic stuff. Their conversations about everyday and irrelevant stuff just makes me laugh every single time. The way that the show uses the most common of topics and makes the mundane something special. There’s a flow and a rhythm to the dialogue. This dynamic is between all four of the main members but in particular with George and Jerry. There is so much importance and pressure placed onto things most people wouldn’t think twice about. Watching Seinfeld is comparable to a masterclass in the art of conversation.

Seinfeld has worked its way into pop culture and our lexicon in general. We all have a puffy shirt that’s just awful, the yada yada yada over the best part of a story or their thoughts on social norms. double dipping, the close talker and the high talkers of the world.Kramer alone with his genius inventions and life hacks are so specific to the world created in Seinfeld. His coffee table book about coffee tables, while also being able to stand like a coffee table in sheer genius. His cologne idea that makes you smell like the beach is fantastic I’d buy that, I even saw an ad for that somewhere a few years ago so Kramer was way ahead on that one. Even the fact that Larry David had a neighbour actually called Kramer is fantastic. There’s nearly too much to talk about but the cultural impact of Seinfeld is still out there today.

The music on the show is still as iconic as ever, even if it is the most late 80’s early 90’s theme song you’ve ever heard. When I hear that intro music going and Jerry’s up on stage doing a bit, that’s it I’m in all the way and I’ll sit down and watch with a big grin on my face. Seinfeld is a show with some of the most original and hilarious moments. From made up holidays like Festivus to the now iconic Elaine dance. The quotes from this show I use in my regular life is crazy. There’s over 9 seasons of this series and it ended right on top as the No. 1 viewed show in the world when they wrapped things up.

Seinfeld is great because the series uses the usual sitcom tropes and clichés then turns it on their side and takes a very specific view on things. If you’re a fan of sitcoms then this is one of the best. It’s an excellent time capsule of the 90’s in New York. If you love a show about conversations, observations and stand up comedy then Seinfeld should be on your watchlist for sure!

Jerry, George, Elaine & Kramer

  1. 10 out of 10 is correct. It’s the greatest sitcom ever – simply hilarious, and much better than a Friends for example, because it’s not so mainstream or clichéd. It’s subversive. It’s genius. It’s just… Seinfeld.
